A Japanese futon isn't the pull-out sofa bed sold under that name in the West. It's a slim, foldable cotton-and-fiber mattress — the shikibuton — laid straight on a tatami mat or the floor, paired with a lightweight duvet called a kakebuton. You roll it up and air it out each morning, which keeps it clean and breathable and frees the room the rest of the day, while giving you the firmer, closer-to-the-ground sleep surface many people find helps with posture and back pain.
Floor sleeping, tatami, and Japandi minimalism are having a moment across Europe — but until now, getting the real thing into the Baltics meant importing it yourself via the UK, Germany, or Japan, often at more than double the price.
